A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
