Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
