The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
