A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
